Maternity Activewear Is a Grading Problem, Not a Size-Up Problem
The fastest way to fail at maternity activewear is the most common one: take the best-selling legging, add two sizes, call it maternity. It fails because pregnancy doesn’t make a body uniformly larger — it adds a third dimension (bump circumference and its week-by-week change) that regular grading has no rule for. Maternity is developed from a maternity block, or it isn’t maternity — the same logic we apply to men’s wear: built on its own block, not resized from someone else’s.
The one decision that shapes everything: over-bump or under-bump
| Over-the-bump | Under-the-bump | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | High panel covering the belly, in ultra-stretch soft knit | Low-rise wide band sitting below the bump |
| Support feel | Gentle compression + back support, “held” feeling | Freedom, zero pressure on the belly |
| Range of use | Second and third trimester shine; panel folds down for early pregnancy and postpartum | Early pregnancy and users who dislike coverage |
| Engineering risk | Panel fabric must stretch enormously and recover postpartum | Band must hold without migrating under a growing shape |
The best programs often run both — or engineer a fold-down panel that converts one garment across the whole timeline: panel up in month eight, folded down at month three and after birth. That convertibility is a pattern-and-fabric decision made on day one, not a styling afterthought.
The three rules of maternity engineering
1. Seams route around the bump, never across it. Front rise curves under the belly; side seams shift; pocket placement moves. A seam crossing a pregnant belly is a comfort complaint by definition.
2. The panel is a recovery problem, not a stretch problem. Almost any knit stretches over a bump; the product question is whether it recovers postpartum — because the recovery phase is when the customer decides whether to recommend you. This is elastane quality territory (the same chemistry that decides all legging lifespans, at higher stakes).
3. Grade on the bump, not just the size. A maternity size chart carries the usual body grades plus the bump dimension. Two size-M customers at week 20 and week 36 are different fits. Good maternity grading absorbs that range inside each size through panel geometry and fabric choice — which is exactly why the size-up shortcut fails.
Why seamless earns its keep here
Seamless knitting maps stretch zones directly into the garment — softer knit over the bump, firmer structure at back and hips — without seams to route around, in one engineered tube. For maternity, that’s not a premium flourish; it solves the category’s two hardest problems (seam placement and zoned support) at the machine level. Our Yiwu seamless floor (Santoni 17–21″) runs exactly this kind of zoned program; cut-and-sew maternity with a proper panel remains the right answer for structured styles and wider fabric choices. As always: the construction is routed to the product, not to the machine we’d prefer to sell.
Nursing-friendly bra development (drop clips, sling access, sizing for change) is its own discipline — a companion topic to sports bra engineering that we’ll treat separately.
Program reality
Maternity works as a capsule: two or three silhouettes, done properly, beat a full range done by resizing. Stock-style entry from 100 sets (mixed colors and sizes) exists for tested blocks; a true custom maternity development runs 300–500 pcs per style per color with fit rounds on the panel geometry — and a size-set round matters more in this category than almost any other.
FAQ
Can I just add a maternity size to my existing legging? You can add a size; you can’t add a dimension. Bump geometry, seam routing and panel recovery don’t exist in your regular block — that’s why maternity starts from a maternity block.
Over-bump or under-bump — which sells better? Over-bump with a fold-down panel covers the most weeks per garment and is the safer single-style bet; ranges that can afford both serve both preferences.
What fabric works for the belly panel? Ultra-soft, high-stretch knit with proven recovery — spec the recovery number, not the adjective. We test it like any stretch-and-recovery approval.
Is maternity a big enough niche? It’s a loyalty niche: underserved customers, high recommendation behavior, natural bridge into postpartum and nursing lines. Capsule-sized risk, outsized word of mouth.
