Toxic Chemicals in Activewear: What the Headlines Get Right — and What to Actually Ask a Factory

Every few months a new headline lands: a watchdog lab finds a “cancer-linked chemical” in a best-selling sports bra. A state attorney general opens an investigation into “forever chemicals” in a famous brand’s leggings. A yoga mat gets pulled for a substance listed as a known carcinogen. The stories are real, the testing is real, and buyers are right to pay attention.

But most of the coverage points shoppers at the wrong thing. It turns into “polyester is poison, buy cotton” — and that instinct, however understandable, does not survive contact with how textiles are actually made. Here is what the headlines got right, what they left out, and the one question that separates a serious factory from a hopeful one.

Four real findings — and what each one actually is

The recent wave of concern is not one story. It is at least four different chemistries, and confusing them is how brands make the wrong sourcing decision.

Four substances, four sources, four different answers. A “PFAS-free” claim says nothing about antimony. An “organic cotton” label says nothing about the dye. Which is exactly the problem with fibre-first thinking.

Why “just switch to cotton” is the wrong lever

The reflex after a scary headline is to abandon synthetics for natural fibre. It feels safe. It often is not, for two reasons.

First, most of these chemicals are not properties of the fibre — they are residues of processing. Dye, finishing agents, catalyst residue, anti-migration layers, water-repellents: these are added downstream, and a poorly-run cotton mill can leave a garment carrying restricted substances just as a poorly-run polyester mill can. Colour that was never properly reduction-cleared, disperse dye that migrates, formaldehyde-based wrinkle finishes — none of that cares whether the base fibre grew on a plant.

Second, “organic cotton” is two very different claims wearing one name, and buyers get caught by the gap:

So a brand that buys “organic cotton” on an OCS basis and assumes it is chemically clean has bought only half the story. If low-tox processing is the goal, GOTS is the claim that carries it — not the word “organic.”

Cotton absolutely has a place. For next-to-skin, low-intensity styles some brands prefer it, and we make it. But it is not automatically safe, and polyester is not automatically toxic. The safety lives in the chemistry and the testing, not the fibre name.

The one question that actually answers it

Here is the lever that cuts through all four chemistries at once: is the finished fabric tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — at the right product class?

Standard 100 is not a fibre label or a marketing badge. It is a laboratory test of the finished textile against around 100 parameters — including BPA, antimony, azo dyes and their arylamines, phthalates, formaldehyde, lead and more. Two things make it the buyer’s real tool:

A brand that can say “our skin-contact fabric is Standard 100 certified” has made a claim a lab stands behind. A brand relying on “it’s organic” or “it’s PFAS-free” has answered one question and left three open.

How we handle it — honestly

We are a factory, not a certifier, so here is the honest version of what we can and cannot say.

We do not call our products “non-toxic” or “chemical-free” — no responsible manufacturer can, because the answer depends on the exact fabric, dye and finish specified for your order. What we do instead:

The principle is simple: we build to your requirement and prove it at source, rather than sell you a reassuring word. If your market or your customer needs certified-clean materials, we specify certified suppliers and can supply the documentation for the lots that go into your order. Questions that expose the difference before you commit

  1. Is this skin-contact fabric OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified — and at which product class?
  2. If we need organic, is the dye-house GOTS certified, or just the cotton OCS?
  3. Can you match my restricted-substance list on the trims, not only the main fabric?
  4. What is the extractable antimony / BPA result on this fabric?

A supplier who answers with certificates, product classes and test values is protecting your brand. One who answers “don’t worry, it’s all safe” is describing the exact gap the headlines keep finding.


FAQ

Is polyester activewear toxic? Not inherently. The concern is residues — catalyst antimony, dye, finishes — that poorly-run processing can leave behind, and that heat and sweat can mobilise. Well-made, properly cleared, Standard 100-tested polyester is a different product from a cheap untested one. The fibre name is not the answer; the test is.

Is organic cotton automatically safer? Only if it is GOTS certified. OCS certifies the fibre but not the dyeing and finishing, so an “organic cotton” garment can still be dyed and finished with conventional chemistry. GOTS covers the whole chain.

What does OEKO-TEX Standard 100 actually test for? Around 100 parameters on the finished textile, including BPA, antimony, azo dyes, phthalates, formaldehyde and lead, with stricter limits for more intensive skin contact. It tests the article you ship, not the raw input.

Do you hold these certificates yourselves? We hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and work to it. Organic (GOTS) and recycled (GRS) certificates are held where the certified processing happens — at the mill and dye-house — and we do not present source-held certificates as our own. We require them where your order needs them.

Can you match a specific restricted-substance list? Yes — on fabric and on trims. Elastics, prints, drawcords and hardware each carry their own chemistry, so we screen the whole bill of materials against your list and require suppliers to document it, not just the main fabric.
