Organic Cotton or Polyester for Activewear? The Question Behind the Question
A brand founder reads the toxic-chemical headlines, looks at a rack of shiny synthetic leggings, and reaches an understandable conclusion: go natural, go organic cotton, it must be cleaner. It is one of the most common briefs we receive — and one of the most misunderstood. Because “organic cotton” is not one claim. It is two very different claims wearing the same name, and the gap between them is where a lot of well-meaning brands get caught.
Here is what the fibre choice actually decides, what it doesn’t, and the question that matters more than “cotton or polyester.”
“Organic cotton” is two certificates, not one
When a supplier says “organic cotton,” ask which standard. The answer changes what you are actually buying.
- OCS (Organic Content Standard) verifies the fibre: that the cotton is genuinely organic and traceable from farm to finished product. That is all it does. OCS says nothing about dyeing, finishing, wastewater or process chemistry. Under OCS alone, a mill can take certified-organic cotton and colour it with conventional, high-impact synthetic dyes — and the garment is still, truthfully, “OCS organic cotton.”
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certifies the whole chain — ginning, spinning, knitting, dyeing, finishing, right through to packaging. Every chemical input has to be pre-approved; toxic dyes and finishes are restricted; the certified facility has to run environmental and wastewater management. GOTS is what most buyers think “organic” means.
So a brand that specifies “organic cotton” on an OCS basis and assumes it has bought a low-chemistry garment has bought only the fibre story. The dye and finish — the part the toxic-chemical headlines are actually about — sit outside OCS entirely. If clean processing is the point, GOTS is the claim that carries it. Where cotton actually wins — and where it quietly loses
Fibre choice is a performance decision before it is a “clean” decision, and pretending otherwise leads to returns. The honest breakdown:

The uncomfortable truth for the “just use cotton” instinct: for genuine performance activewear — anything worn to sweat in — 100% cotton usually underperforms, and most “cotton” activewear is really a cotton-rich blend with elastane (and sometimes polyester) knitted in for recovery. Which means the moment you blend, the “pure natural” story softens and you are back to the same question: what chemistry went into the fabric, and was it tested?
None of this makes cotton wrong. For the right style — a lounge set, a low-intensity yoga line, a soft everyday tee — GOTS organic cotton is a genuinely strong, marketable choice, and we make it. It just is not a universal “safer” swap for performance pieces, and selling it as one invites fit and function complaints.
The lever that beats the fibre label
Whether you go cotton or synthetic, the question that actually answers “is this safe against skin” is the same: is the finished fabric tested — OEKO-TEX Standard 100, at the right skin-contact product class?
Standard 100 tests the article you ship against roughly 100 harmful-substance parameters, with stricter limits for more intensive skin contact. It applies to organic cotton and to synthetics equally — a GOTS-dyed cotton and a well-cleared, Standard 100 polyester can both be genuinely clean, and an untested version of either can carry residues. That is why “cotton vs polyester” is the wrong headline. The real decision is fibre for performance, certificate for safety — two separate specs, chosen on purpose.
How we source it — honestly
We hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and work to it on skin-contact fabric. For an organic line, the GOTS certificate lives with the mill and dye-house that do the certified processing — we require it at source and do not present it as our own. The same goes for recycled content via GRS. And because most of the chemistry risk hides in the parts nobody specs, we match trims — elastics, drawcords, prints, hardware — to your restricted-substance list too, not just the main fabric.

FAQ
Is organic cotton activewear automatically non-toxic? No. OCS certifies only the fibre; the dyeing and finishing can still use conventional chemistry. GOTS certifies the whole processing chain, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished article. “Organic” alone is a fibre claim, not a safety guarantee.
What is the real difference between GOTS and OCS? OCS is fibre-content track-and-trace — it confirms the cotton is organic. GOTS regulates the entire post-farm chain including dyeing and finishing, pre-approving chemical inputs and restricting toxic dyes. For a “clean processing” claim, GOTS is the one that carries it.
Is cotton better than polyester for activewear? For low-sweat, next-to-skin comfort, cotton is excellent. For training, compression and moisture management, engineered synthetics outperform it — and most “cotton” activewear is a blend with elastane for recovery. Choose fibre for the performance the style needs.
Can polyester activewear be genuinely clean? Yes — properly cleared and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tested, it is a controlled product. The safety comes from the processing and the testing, not from avoiding the fibre.
