OEM & ODM Activewear Manufacturer in China: What OEM and ODM Mean, and How We Work

Short answer: In clothing, OEM (original equipment manufacturing) usually describes a factory making the buyer's design, with materials sourcing included in a full-package arrangement; ODM (original design manufacturing) adds supplier-led design. Confirm the design, sourcing and production responsibilities in the order agreement: the label alone does not define the scope. YOUMEGA is a private-label activewear manufacturer with two production facilities in China (Xiamen and Yiwu): fully custom OEM and ODM orders start at 300–500 pieces per style per colour; stock styles with your logo start at 100 sets per order, mixing available colours and sizes.

What OEM and ODM mean in clothing

Apparel researchers at Duke University (CGGC) describe these as stages of what a factory takes on:

In activewear, an OEM order might start from your tech pack for a legging; an ODM order from a sports bra we have developed, in the fabric and colour you choose.

OEM, ODM, private label and white label

Term What it describes Who designs Whose brand is on it
CMT The factory sews fabric the buyer supplies The buyer The buyer's
OEM The factory makes the buyer's design; materials sourcing depends on the agreed scope The buyer The buyer's
ODM The factory designs as well as makes; the buyer adapts The factory The buyer's
Private label A retail term: the seller owns or licenses the brand on the product Either The seller's
White label Used loosely for one maker's product sold by several sellers under their own brands The maker Each seller's

One garment can sit in two columns: the Duke researchers note that full package with design is common for private-label retail brands. Because suppliers use these words loosely, the useful question is what is exclusive to you — the design, the fabric, the colour, or only the logo. We call our lower-minimum route stock styles with your logo, because that is what it is. More in what factories mean by OEM vs ODM.

How an order works

  1. Brief. Send a tech pack, sketches or a reference garment, or pick one of our base designs, with quantities per style and colour. We reply within 24 hours on working days, in English, Spanish or Chinese; our tech pack guide shows what to include.
  2. Fabric and quote. We propose fabric options such as nylon–spandex, polyester–spandex, recycled polyester (rPET) and regenerated nylon (ECONYL). Agree on the composition and fabric weight for the specific style. The quote follows the specification: fabric and weight, construction, logo method, trims, packaging and quantity.
  3. Sample. A stock style with your logo takes 7 days; an OEM development sample 10–15 days; an ODM development sample about 7–10 days, not counting design preparation. Minor adjustments on the original sample are free; major changes are charged again.
  4. Colour and trim requirements. For custom dyeing, agree on the Pantone reference and lab-dip approval before bulk dyeing. Specify labels, elastics, drawcords and zip pulls in the trim sheet, and confirm their lead times for the order.
  5. Bulk production. Cut-and-sew styles run on our Xiamen lines; seamless styles are knitted in Yiwu on Santoni 17–21" machines. Confirm the requested size range through sampling, rather than inferring garment sizes from machine diameter. Agree on measurement checkpoints and tolerances against the approved sample before production starts.
  6. Inspection and hand-over. Finished goods are inspected in-house to AQL 2.5 (what AQL means) and packed. We hold our own import-export licence; FOB, CIF, EXW and DDP are available.

Quality control, certificates and compliance

Quality control is in-house, at AQL 2.5 on finished goods. Each document below is named accurately:

What it is Our position
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 A certificate for textiles tested for harmful substances YOUMEGA holds an OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate. A certificate covers the articles named in its scope, so ask for the PDF and check that your style is in scope
amfori BSCI A social compliance audit, not a certification Our production is audited under amfori BSCI
GRS (Global Recycled Standard) A standard for recycled content The GRS scope certificate is held by the fabric mill or dye house, not by us, and we do not claim it as ours. See GRS scope and transaction certificates
EU REACH, US CPSIA Regulations, not certifications We work to these as regulatory compliance

Ask for the applicable PDFs while you are assessing us; we send them within 24 hours.

Who makes your order

YOUMEGA (Xiamen Mega Garment Co., Ltd.) was founded in 2017 and has run 1,000+ private-label projects since, for brands in 50+ countries across five continents. It has 51–200 employees, is a manufacturer rather than a trading company, and runs two facilities: Xiamen, Fujian (headquarters, cut-and-sew lines, quality control) and Yiwu, Zhejiang (seamless knitting on Santoni 17–21" machines — see seamless activewear).

FAQ

What does OEM mean in clothing? OEM stands for original equipment manufacturing. In clothing it usually means a factory produces garments to another company's design and specifications for that company's brand. In a full-package arrangement, the factory also sources the fabric and trims and handles finishing and packing. Confirm who buys materials and pays for them in the actual agreement; "OEM" alone does not settle that scope.

What does ODM stand for, and what is an ODM manufacturer? ODM stands for original design manufacturing. An ODM manufacturer designs products as well as making them: the buyer picks one of the factory's designs, adapts details such as fabric, colour and trims, and sells it under its own brand. An ODM development sample here takes about 7–10 days, not counting design preparation.

Is OEM a brand, and is OEM clothing authentic? No, OEM is not a brand, a mark of quality or proof that a seller is authorised by a named brand. It describes a manufacturing arrangement. Check brand authorisation and the supply chain separately; an "OEM" label alone does not establish authenticity or rights to a design.

Is OEM clothing good quality, and is it worth it? "OEM" says who designed and made a garment, not how well. Quality comes from the fabric specification, the construction and the inspection standard, so ask about all three. OEM is worth it when you need your own fit, fabric or details; to test demand first, our stock styles with your logo start at 100 sets.

What is the minimum order for OEM or ODM activewear? At YOUMEGA, fully custom OEM and ODM orders start at 300–500 pieces per style per colour, depending on the product, and custom Pantone colours start at the same level. Stock styles with your logo start at 100 sets, with mixed colours and sizes allowed.

How long do OEM and ODM samples and bulk production take? A first sample takes 7 days for a stock style with your logo, 10–15 days for an OEM development sample, and about 7–10 days for an ODM development sample, not counting design preparation. Bulk takes 20–25 days for stock styles and 30–35 days fully custom, from order confirmation until the goods leave the factory. Shipping is additional.

What is "maquila de ropa" in English? In parts of Latin America, "maquila" refers to textile manufacturing for export or a factory doing that work. Contract manufacturing is a useful general English term. CMT is one possible arrangement, where the buyer supplies the fabric; a full-package order also includes materials sourcing. Confirm who provides the design, fabric and trims instead of treating "maquila" as a fixed scope of service.
